Before the Light: Sunrise on Mount Batur

A pre dawn climb, a sky that changes colour by the minute, and breakfast on the volcano. Mount Batur is the sunrise hike most guests ask about, and one that fits comfortably into a stay at Swarma.

Some mornings at Swarma begin with coffee on the terrace. This one begins in the dark.

Mount Batur is an active volcano northeast of Ubud, and climbing it for sunrise is one of Bali's most loved experiences. It is also one of the most honest. You wake in the small hours, the house is silent, and the only sound is a car idling at the gate. The drive north is quiet. Then the climb begins by headlamp, a steady path upward through dark rock, with the cool air thinning as you rise.

It is not a difficult mountain, but it is a real one. The trail is steep in places, the ground is loose underfoot, and the early start asks something of you before the day has begun. Sturdy shoes, a light jacket for the summit, and a little patience with yourself are all you need. Most guests of average fitness manage it well, and a guide stays with you throughout.

Then, near the top, the sky starts to shift. First a grey seam along the horizon, then a thin line of amber, then colour spreading outward across the clouds until the lake below catches it and Mount Agung rises in the distance. People tend to stop talking here. Nothing on the way up quite prepares you for it.

Breakfast is often taken on the mountain itself, eaten slowly while the light settles and the day begins below you. By the time you are back at Swarma, it is still morning. The pool is quiet, Paon is just beginning to stir, and the rest of the day is yours to spend lazily.

We would suggest keeping that afternoon free. Rest is part of the experience, and the best way to end this morning is a long lunch, a swim, and an early night.
